F.Y.I. Featuring Mat.Joe

Read the interview

Mat.Joe is a DJ duo based out of Germany, who produce and play their own brand of music: Crispy Urban House. Taking hard hitting house beats and skillful adding in elements from soul, and hip-hop, the duo have created a genre defining sound that pushes the boundaries of modern music. We sat down and talked to them about things ranging from who inspires them all the way to living in space.

Where were you born? Mat: Hildesheim , Germany. Joe: Hannover , Germany.

At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”? When we both quit our jobs and our studying and got our first cash for shows. That’s when we intuitively knew it’s the “point of no return”. We always thought hope that point would arrive, but we are still to this day so happy and grateful to be able to make a living out of doing something we love and are passionate about. What type of music did you listen to growing up? A lot of different genres: Funk, Soul, Hip Hop, Punk, Hardcore, RnB. Artists like Jamiroquai , Sly Johnson, Bobby Womack, Lauryn Hill , Wu-Tang, NOFX, Eightball, Brightside, Sick Of It All, Pharrell, Aaliyah, J Dilla, Jeru The Damaja, Masta Ace, Gangstarr, Rasco, Planet Asia. Should we go on??

If you could remix one of those artists music, and open for them, who would it be? Pharrell or Wu-Tang Clan would be pretty sick. They inspire us everyday and we would be most grateful to open a show for them. Got a lot of respect for these guys. And Nickelback, of course.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played? It really depends on the event, usually two hours but sometimes three or four if the vibe is right. We played around 8 hours at Lost Beach Club in Montañita , Ecuador and loved every minute of it. If everything comes together in the right way, we’d go on forever.

What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard? Lost Beach Club, Montañita, Geisha Bar , Perth, D-Edge , São Paul, and of course Berghain . All different of course, but equally amazing. It’s such a shame that every club doesn’t put the sound system at the top of its list. It definitely should be.

Where’s the best sound system you’ve ever played on? Both Lost Beach Club and Geisha Bar are incredible. Warm yet crystal clear.: pretty much the perfect combination.

Can you describe how your style music sounds? (For context, it’s 3AM, and you are playing a warm open air venue, with an amazing sound system and there’s 1500 people who are huge fans of yours) Wow, sounds like a decent setting! Well, we like to call it “CrispyUrbanHouse”. It would for sure contain our tracks but also a variety of different styles. It’s all about reading the crowd, especially at cozy open air venues. You never know where the journey goes. When the sun rises some hours later, literally anything can happen.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months? Jamie Jones at DC-10 . His set really captures the spirit of this place, especially at a Paradise party. We were lucky to be there just one week before it was recorded. Bangin!

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go? We would stay forever, take all our beloved ones and go to Venus!

What do you think about On&OnSF.com? You guys have an impressive history! Keep bringing the music to SF and thank you so much for talking to us!

Big Thank You to Mat.Joe for taking the time to connect with us for this installment of F.Y.I. Come listen to their set Friday, November 19, 2016 at Monarch . Discounted Tix Here .

F.Y.I. Featuring Patricio (DoLab, Favela Music)

Read the interview

Our first experience hearing Patricio was in 2001 at Burning Man, and this night has never been forgotten. Clawing my way to the booth and asking people along the way, “Who is this guy…anyone know the Deejay’s name?”. He’s a top tier artist in our book, who’s always consistently good, and versatility. It makes sense, Patricio’s experience in the early 90’s behind the decks converted into a profound knowledge of what people want on the dance floor. His sound has been known to be all over the musical spectrum, creating a force that makes you want to move and smile a the same time. Full of synths, tribal and psychedelic rythms and beats and lush basslines. At On&On, we Love Basslines! We sat down with Patricio to bring you this installment of Free You Inhibitions…

Where were you born?

Buenos Aires, Argentina

What type of music did you listen to growing up?

My dad is a musician and a Tango music producer. I was raised exposed to a lot of tango at early age but I’ve always been open to every type of music from Jazz and classical to Punk rock and Metal until I discovered electronic music in 1990 after I moved to Los Angeles in 1988 from Argentina.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played?

I would have to say that an Ideal set will have to be at least 3 hours. In order to be able to take everyone in a musical Journey. I have played up to 8 hours straight or 14 hours in 2 different sound systems in the same day.

What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard?

I love the sound of the d&b audiotechnik system… super clean and full. Then Meyer Sound comes on a close second place.

Can you describe how your style music sounds? (For context, it’s 3AM, and you are playing a warm open air venue, with an amazing sound system and there’s 1500 people who are huge fans of yours)

I love playing music that makes ME want to dance. I like music that invokes good energy, makes people get excited and smile, great grooves, driving bass, melodic synths, sometimes a little tribal, sometimes more psychedelic. I try to break through the stereopype of genres but always keeping a certain flow and congruence.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months?

I will have to say the one that has stayed in my memory the most goes back 2 years in Tulum. On the beach under a magical full moon, NU , Acid Pauli , JO.KE , Raz Ohara and Christopher Schwarzwalder . All together. A beautiful night of music. Other than that… Marques Wyatt a the FAVELA BAR at Lightning in a Bottle .

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go?

Probably no more than a few days, I would bring my wife and probably around the moon and back… go check and make sure there is no big alien ships lurking and waiting to take over the earth.

If you had to come up with a weird name for a track, what would it be?

Stratoripper

Did Noah have woodpeckers on the ark? If he did, where did he keep them?

In his tool box?

What happens to an irresistible force when it hits an immovable object?

They decided to go for drinks? I’m sure if the force is irresistible it won’t say no to the object!

Big Thank You to Patricio for taking the time to connect with us for this installment of F.Y.I. Come listen to his play live Sat, Oct 15, 2016 at The Public Works . Discounted Tix Here .

F.Y.I. Featuring KMLN (Sol Selectas)

August 10, 2016

F.Y.I. Featuring KMLN (Sol Selectas)

Read the interview

KMLN (pronounced: Kameleon) has been non-stop this year, following their dreams… It has been truly inspiring to see them take their music to the another level, and they have definitely hit a beautiful stride. Meet the talented Duo, made up of Shawna Hofmann + Christopher Wayne Tooker know as KMLN . These two are world travels, music junkies, and counter culture trendsetters. Always ahead of the cure, their music encapsulates their broad sense of world and it’s different cultural musical communities. To us, KMLN is the definition of a soundtrack for Love and Adventure. We caught up with Duo in preparation for the Sunday Open Air event in San Francisco, and for On&On’s next installment of Free Your Inhibitions….

Where were you born?

-Shawna: in Penticton Bc, Canada.

-Christopher: in Turin, Italy.

At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”. -Shawna: I’ve been a self taught, self employed artist all my life with a series of media, having music be the constant throughout. in 2012, right before i met Christopher, I had made a commitment to pursue music only and drop the fashion business I had been running and designing for the previous 9 years. I felt it was time to focus on one thing and not feel so spread out all the time. And that’s when I also got serious about learning to produce music professionally and committed to learn my way around the studio propah!

-Christopher: Went from a baby playing pots and pans and imitating Michael Jackson off VHS cassettes, to realizing groove had won me over. In the early teens music became my obsession, getting deep into drums, bass, guitar and singing in too many bands some of which saw major label support. Although satisfying it felt limiting. In rome is where KMLN was born, deciding to move to Berlin after realizing I needed to drop everything and be “all in”.

What time of music did you listen to growing up? -Shawna: i grew up in Winnipeg where the main event of the year was the Winnipeg Music Folk Festival each summer camping out in a National Park under the long prairie skies and featuring long sunsets and Aurora Borealis . This is where I gained my taste for the multitudinous traditional Folk musics of the world. And that’s what i still prefer to this day to listen to when at home.

-Christopher: Music has filled my days from the age of 6, then later listening to recordings of my bands practices or studio material. But other then that from Nina Simone to Deep Forest to Tool, i’d eat up whatever was put in front of me. Mainly live stuff though.

If you could remix one of those artists music, and open for them, who would it be? -Shawna: Hard to choose one, but off the top of my head. Ladysmith Black Mambazo ….oh wait Sheila Chandra

-Christopher: i think it would be the Jimi Hendrix experience, opening with a double drum solo with Mitch Mitchell.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played? -Shawna: Long morning sets are my fave when everyone is “in it”, like Sunday morning at Burning Man at the El Circo Dome and the set lasts 4-5 hours or more….everyone’s commitment to being really there is what fuels me. As soon as I feel the energy wane and I’m already tired I feel ready to pass on the torch!

-Christopher: ideal length would be as long as my legs held and there was 1 smiling person on the dance floor.longest official set has to be 8 hours in suicide circus in Berlin, but if we talk about cosy van parties……

What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard? both: Void

Where’s the best sound system you’ve ever played on? -Shawna: Where there is so much love put into every aspect of the party and everything is dialed. And the sound person on whichever sound has total passion for music and sound quality. Because they all sound amazing in the right context.

-Chris: favorite moment remains golden gate berlin seeing sound guys at the end of parties tweaking for hours on improving the sound.

Can you describe how your style music sounds? (For context, it’s 3AM , and you are playing a warm open air venue, with an amazing sound system and there’s 1500 people who are huge fans of yours): -It definitely has Syncopated rhythm’s that speak to the multicultural hips in us. And it keeps all on their toes~ literally! You’re surprised at each new sound, because we never like it to settle on a loop 😉 Then there’s the emotional journey, leading you down lanes of memory, suspense, sentimental appreciation, sexy town and on n on down to the underworld. Then back around to your body as the wheel of life turns <3

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months? -Butch!!! At Desert Hearts, hands down! Changed us musically period. we rediscovered a sound that neither of us knew the other loved and now we’ve incorporated that into our sets. Deep hi nrg psychedelic Tech House ha!

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go?

-Shawna: Definitely to one of our ancestor planets of the beings who spawned us and left us here on this experiment heaven hell gift of an existence Earth… But need some conclusive evident proof of exactly where that would be… Pleiades system? I would bring the humans I know in my heart are badass hard working, humble, lucidly conscious folk that I could trust to call me out when I’m in the wrong and inspire me when I need vision;) It wouldn’t hurt to have a full spectrum of science specialists, a strong inspiring team leader, engineers of all disciplines.

Chris: what she said, sounds like my cup o tea, with a “arc car” full of animals for sure

What do you think about On&On On&OnSF.com? We live in the middle of the redwood forest and rarely hit the scene these days of late.Of the few memorable parties we’ve attended in the last couple years in SF, On&On were the parties we went to as fans of the music, actually bought tix to dance for reals! Thanks O&On for bringing that quality!

Big Thank You to KMLN for taking the time to connect with us for this installment of F.Y.I. Come listen to them play live Sunday, August 14, 2016 on the Midway Patio for Permission to Land. Discounted Tix Here .

F.Y.I. Featuring Martin Buttrich (Rhythm Assault, Desolat, Planet E)

Read the interview

Considered a Genius in the studio by many industry leaders, Martin Buttrich is one of electronic music’s most sought-after and prolific producers. Martin is a producer’s, producer, whose work spans far… He’s created music for artists such as Depeche Mode , Loco Dice , Green Velvet , Josh Wink , Roger Sanchez , Kelis and remix huge artists like Madonna, and Tori Amos, for which he was nominated for a Grammy. Above all, he’s a hell of a nice person, with a heart of gold. We sat down with Martin, for this edition on Free Your Inhibitions …

Where were you born? I was born in Hildeshein Germany, just outside of Hannover. It’s a small town, with only 100,000 people. I spent most of my time in Hannover though growing up.

At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”. Well, it’s pretty hard to say. I was really working in music from a young age, but I must have been around 19 years old when I was actually making decent money from working in the studio. This is when I started with Timo Maas . It rolled into a very fun and rewarding career. I’ve never had a reason or a thought to think about it another career, as music just worked and worked from a pretty young age.

What time of music did you listen to growing up? Really, I grew up listening mainly to Hip Hop Music. I was a big Native Tongues fan, you know Tribe Called Quest , De La Soul , Jungle Brothers etc. If you could remix one of those artists music, and open for them, who would it be? If I could open for one of those acts it would be Tribe for sure and if I had to remix one, well, Buggin Out by Tribe. RIP Phife Dog ! I mean, look I would love to do one of those old school Native Tongues parties in NYC or push to shove, I’m happy to open for Big Daddy Kane and Marley Marl.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played? My ideal set length is between 2, 3 hours and the longest set I’ve ever played was 7 hours in Asylum in Hawaii. What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard? This is not an easy question as these days many nightclubs have great systems. But, Stereo in Montreal is dope and the new Nordstern in Basel, Switzerland which I just played at was RIDICULOUS.

Can you describe how your style music sounds? (For context, it’s 3AM, you are playing a warm open air venue, with an amazing sound system and there are 1500 people who are huge fans of yours) I guess playing at 3am in a warm open air venue calls for lovely warm house music 😉

What do you think about On&On ? Any brand that is dedicating themselves to pushing great new music, the way that On&On does, is thought of highly in my house.

Big Thank You to Martin Buttrich for taking the time to connect with us for this installment of F.Y.I. Come listen to him play live Friday, July 29, 2016 at Mighty. Complimentary admission before 11PM with Guestlist Here .

F.Y.I. Featuring Matthew Dekay (All Day I Dream)

April 17, 2016

F.Y.I. Featuring Matthew Dekay (All Day I Dream)

Read the interview

On&On welcomes Producer, DJ, and Co-Founder of All Day I Dream , Matthew Dekay for this edition on Free Your Inhibitions . We are impressed by the determination of this artist who had the will to say no to a well-paying commercial career and re-focus himself to the core of his love of music. Enjoy this wonderful conversation about early influences, and his thoughts on the space, life, and the perfect sound system…

Where were you born? I was born in Haarlem a small city close to Amsterdam in The Netherlands.

At what point in your career as an Artist, did you realize that you were “All In”. That was approximately 17 years ago at the end of the 90’s when I decided to release music under the artist name Matthew Dekay . Yes, Matthew is my real name, but my last name is not Dekay 😉 I grew up listening to a lot of different music. My father was a bass player and he played a lot of Funk music with Rhythm and Soul. My Mother, on the other hand, danced in a Romanian Folklore group so she was really into to all the very heavy dramatic (lots of minor chords) music. I guess the mixture of both is very much my signature sound.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played? My ideal set length would be 6 hours because I feel you can tell a good story and still be able to control the flow. I love playing longer too but that depends on a lot of other factors like venue, crowd, and sound system. The longest I’ve ever played was 12 hrs and for me that was enough 🙂 However when I play 8hrs I never need to go to the toilet! I guess I was genetically born differently… With an optimized bladder for DJing 🙂

What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard? Custom sound system made by a Swiss guy that developed studio speakers for Amphion .

Where’s the best sound system you’ve ever played on? If I have to choose one, it would have to be Stereo Bar in Montreal. I love that sound system! Of course, there are a lot more places with wonderful sound but that system I could play on for days on end!

Imagine you’re performing in a warm open-air venue, it’s 3AM, there’s an amazing sound system, and the crowd consists of 1,500 of your biggest fans. How would you describe your musical style in this moment? My music is first and foremost based on rhythmic flow and groove believe it or not! Yes, I love dramatic melodies in minor chords but the foundation is hypnotizing the crowd with a funky groove. I guess my sound is spiritual. It doesn’t necessarily draw attention to itself. It requires a certain concentration from the audience to really get into my musical flow. You have to pay attention to the subtleties in order to have a real appreciation for it. My music is definitely not easy and I don’t like to play it safe. I love taking lots of risks during my sets and my aim is to play tracks people have never heard before but want to hear again. I am not a jukebox, I have a story to tell.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months? A memorable set? Hmmm… Well I was playing in at Hoppetosse in Berlin with Federico Molinari and I loved his set. He played after me and I told myself as soon as he played a tune I didn’t like I would go home. Well this didn’t happen and I stayed until the end around noon the next day which is extremely rare for me!

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go? You know I really love where I am. Space might be wonderful but I think only to look back at the Earth and realize how little we are but also that everything is one. To me the most powerful thing is imagination.

What do you think about On&On? Keep doing what you guys are doing! You’re great 🙂

We caught up with Tempo Tantrum for Part One of On&On’s next installment of Free Your Inhibitions…

It’s safe to say the Artistic Duo Pan-Pot (Tassilo Ippenberger & Thomas Benedix) are at they peak of their creative game, and have no signs of slowing down. They have earned respect from the electronic music industry’s finest. In this day, it’s rare to find artist who are aces in the studio and amazing Dj’s. Where were you born?, Thomas: in Templin, a small city bit North-East of Berlin., Tassilo: also small city but in Bavaria, called Traunstein. So when we were born we lived in different parts of back then divided Germany.

At what point in your career as a Artists¨ did you realize that you were “All In”?, Tassilo: That was actually when we both met at the school of audio engineering. With our first releases, especially on mobilee we know that this was it.

What type of music did you listen to growing up?, Tassilo: for me it was Hip-Hop and Rock, quite all over the place., Thomas: My grandma bought me a Thuderdome hardcore cassette, which got me instantly hooked to Techno. So that was there for me very quite early. If you could remix one of those artists and open for them at a club who would it be?, Thomas: The Prophet and I would love to play at Gashouder with him 🙂

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played?, Tassilo: This is really hard to say. The average is around 2-3 hours but it totally depends on the place. At festivals you usually play shorter sets and at clubs we do like to play longer. At our residents for example Watergate Berlin or Stereo Montreal we like to play sets around 6 hours., Thomas: Next year we want to play an all-nighter in Berlin again, which usually is around 8 hours. Thats about the max though, even for two people, as we don’t take turns but play together.

What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard?, Tassilo: For me it was at Ageha, Tokyo ., Tassilo: Space, Ibiza

Where’s the best sound system you’ve ever played on?, Thomas: the same. 🙂, Tassilo: Ageha, Tokyo

Can you describe how your style music sounds? (For contex, it’s 3AM, and you are playing a warm open air venue with an amazing sound system and there’s 1500 people who are huge fans of yours!), Thomas: Totally depend on the crowd, if its more release then bit like this: https://soundcloud.com/pan-pot/pan-pot-sonar-by-day-2015 and it they want more action that like this: https://soundcloud.com/pan-pot/pan-pot-sonar-by-night-2015

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months?, Tassilo: Probably the Amnesia Closing party in Ibiza, where we played on the terrace., Thomas: agreed.

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go?, Thomas: Realistically: one month to ISS or 3days to the moon and unrealistically: Kepler 452b or some Exoplanets in habitale zone at M31 (Andromeda)

Read the interview

Finnebassen ‘s global attention being in 2011 when discovered from his Soundcloud and shortly after, when “ If You Only Knew ” hit the charts… It wasn’t long before labels like he was putting out music on reputable labels such as Get Physical Music , Supernature , Culprit , or Poesie Music . Later on he took his career to another level with his Essential Mix and we’re still listening to it today… We caught up with Finnebassen, for On&On’s next installment of Free Your Inhibitions….

Where were you born? I was born in Oslo, Norway .

At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”. I’m not sure. I felt that I was all in when I quit my job to try to do music fulltime. That was when I 100% committed to this life. But I didn’t know I could do it until my track ” Touching Me ” went #1 on Beatport Deep House.

What type of music did you listen to growing up? All kinds of music. But my father was a big influence. He liked country, rock, Blues and old pop. I remember listening to Donald Fagen when he drove me to school. When I got older I picked up the guitar and was totally submerged in guitar heroes; Jimi, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page, Gary Moore, Noel Gallagher, Gerige Benson. But I also listned to R’n’B and Hip Hop, Soul, Funk and Jazz. I seemed to find music within alot of genres I enjoyed.

If you could remix one of those artists music, and open for them, who would it be? Probably I would like to make some funky Edit of George Benson . But I kinda already did. I really wouldnt want to remix old goldies. Some things you just dont mess with. They are perfect as they are.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played? It Depends on the warm up Dj. I like to start off slow and build the set myself. Then I can play for a LONG time. 5-7 hours easily. I mean I would like to play 3-5 hour sets most of the time, but sometimes its hard to pick up after someone if you dont like where they are taking the vibe or where they have already taken it.

What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard? Jaeger in Oslo.

Where’s the best sound system you’ve ever played on? Jaeger in Oslo

Can you describe how your style music sounds? (For context, it’s 3AM, and you are playing a warm open air venue, with an amazing sound system and there’s 1500 people who are huge fans of yours) Well I play melancholic house and techno. I play with my heart on my sleeve I guess its hard to describe. Come to my gig and hear for yourself.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months? I dont really listen to alot of sets these days. But Jon Charnis at Burning Man was a big suprise. Really impressive. Full of suspense and emotion.

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go? I would never go. I’m Scared shitless of that concept. I have a hard enough time just taking off in a normal airplane.

Blond:ish has been hard at work this year and is feeling great right now. With their debut full length finally released, Welcome to the Present ( Kompakt ), it’s clear their momentum isn’t going to let up anytime in the foreseeable future . We caught up with Blond:ish, for On&On’s next installment of Free Your Inhibitions….

Where were you born? Viv: Hamilton ON, Canada (near Toronto) Anstascia: Versailles, France

At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”. When we heard the vedic saying “nada brahma” and learned what it meant…that sound is god. This hit home for us as we learned after that everything is vibration, and that sound goes much further than just a 2d wave file… the study of cymatics has been extremely fascinating to us lately and has opened up a whole new perspective on sound and how to approach this topic as artists. We’re definitely all in.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played? 5 hours ideal if the vibe is right, longest probably around 12 hours.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months? Margaret Dygas at Off Sonar, Oceanvs Orientalis at Burning Man

Is it still illegal to park next to a fire hydrant, even if your car is on fire? There’s always an exception to every rule.

If you had to come up with a weird name for a record label, what would it be? 11100000111100001010101010101010000011001010101 records i guess

What’s your worst pet peeve? When you’re on the plane listening to a movie or whatever and the PA system interrupts and its sooo loud it basically makes you temporarily deaf.

We assume you create awkward moments, or revel in awkward moments… are there any that come to mind? When you start eye gazing with a random stranger at the grocery store in aisle 4, and they run away to call security.

When lightning strikes the ocean, why don’t all the fish die? Im sure some fish have died but most of the lightning usually strikes on land and water is a good conductor of energy so the impact dissipates horizontally and fish are usually deeper in the ocean not so much on the surface. So all those factors mean that not a lot of fish die (apparently scientifically proven)

What does PU stand for (as in “PU, that stinks!”)? purple unicorns

Did Noah have woodpeckers on the ark? If he did, where did he keep them? obviously … if he had his own show “woody woodpecker” and made it onto kellogg’s cereal boxes, they must’ve been on there (in a metal cage)

What happens to an irresistible force when it hits an immovable object? nothing is absolute. an immovable object is always moving at its optimal resonant frequency.

If there’s a speed of sound and a speed of light, is there a speed of smell? yes depends on the size of your nostrils.

Why is tuna sometimes called “tuna fish”? Chicken is never called “chicken bird”. we wouldn’t know we don’t eat chicken or birds…

Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouth closed? because it helps them not to blink.. try it!!

F.Y.I. featuring HOBO

Read the interview

Hailed from Canada, Joel Boychuk AKA Hobo , is a classically trained Percussive Musician, living in Berlin. Having releases on staples such as, Solomun & H.O.S.H.’s Diynamic , Jamie Jones & Lee Foss’s Hot Creations , Anja Schneider’s Mobilee , and of course Richie Hawtin’s Minus . Hobo is a seasoned veteran in the world of electronic music and beyond. Things got a little weird today during this interview…prepare yourself for On&On’s next installment of Free Your Inhibitions .

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go?

I’d go BASE jumping on Miranda, one of the moons of Uranus. Miranda has a cliff known as Verona Rupes which is 5km high and is believed to be our solar system’s highest cliff (going by our current knowledge). That height coupled with Miranda’s minuscule 0.018g would make BASE jumping from it a spectacular ride down that would last over ten minutes. You’d only need a very small jetpack to land safely on your feet. That would be pretty sick I think.

If an ambulance is on its way to save someone, and it runs someone over, does it stop to help them?

I would think so. They’re already there. BRB going to jump in front of ambulance.

Why do men have nipples?

Because an X chromosome is a hell of a drug.

If man evolved from monkeys, how come we still have monkeys?

Richard Dawkins would be so pissed that you’re asking this.

Is it still illegal to park next to a fire hydrant, even if your car is on fire?

I think it is, yes. But damn it if it isn’t convenient!

What is Satan’s last name?

Satan, a close follower of Madonna , dropped his last name to be more like her.

What’s your worst pet peeve?

Having ear buds pulled unexpectedly from my ears!

Why do people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up every few hours?

I thought it was because they wake up in the night crying, like babies do.

When lightning strikes the ocean, why don’t all the fish die?

Fish are tough. Lightning isn’t enough.

Did Noah have woodpeckers on the ark? If he did, where did he keep them?

Trick question. Woodpeckers evolved after noah’s ark sank in the north atlantic in 1912.

Why put a towel in the dirty clothes basket if when you get out of the shower you are clean?

Because surely drying oneself off is not the only thing that towel has been used for… Towels have great practical value. For example, you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V.

What happens to an irresistible force when it hits an immovable object?

How irresistible is this force? Irresistible like a snickers bar? If that’s how irresistible it is, then it gets eaten.

If there’s a speed of sound and a speed of light, is there a speed of smell?

No, but there is a speed of love. It’s 89.

Why is a carrot more orange than an orange?

Not all carrots are orange, and not all oranges are carrots.

Why is tuna sometimes called “tuna fish”? Chicken is never called “chicken bird”.

Because Kentucky Fried Chicken Bird sounds stupid!

Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Little known fact time: It’s a reflex! When a person, man or woman, applies mascara he or she subconsciously opens their mouth because millions of years ago our ancestors used to salt their food with their own tears. Now that we, as a species, have developed better food preparation methods we no longer require ocular salting. And the way those tears were teased out was similar to how one applies mascara. And now you know. And knowing is half the battle.

Who would win in a fight between Spiderman and Batman

Nerds everywhere!

We assume you create awkward moments, or revel in awkward moments… are there any that come to mind?

Every time a high-five or handshake gets left hanging, the child in me rejoices. I find no greater joy than to witness those magic moments and the poor bastard left hanging!

Wow, these are great answers! A Big Thank You to Hobo for taking the time to connect with us for this installment of F.Y.I. Come listen to the Hobo at Monarch this Saturday, June 13, 2015. Discount Pre-sales Here .

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go?

I´d love to see earth from space. “When you go around the Earth in an hour and a half, you begin to recognize that your identity is with that whole thing,” Apollo 9 astronaut Russell Schweickart said once “That makes a change. You look down there and you can’t imagine how many borders and boundaries you cross, again and again and again, and you don’t even see them. There you are, hundreds of people in the Mideast killing each other over some imaginary line that you’re not even aware of, and that you can’t see.” that´s it.

If an ambulance is on its way to save someone, and it runs someone over, does it stop to help them?

keep calm and carry on.

Why do men have nipples?

Every baby inherits one copy of every gene from his or her father and one copy of every gene from his or her mother. Inherited traits of a boy should thus be a combination of traits from both his parents. Then you can also say chest would look funny without nipples.

If man evolved from monkeys, how come we still have monkeys?

Humans did not evolve from monkeys; humans and monkeys both evolved from an extinct common ancestor.

Is it still illegal to park next to a fire hydrant, even if your car is on fire?

I never drove a car in my life nor a fire hydrant. I can´t tell about regulation.

What is Satan’s last name?

Gutierrez

What’s your worst pet peeve?

People hamming terrible songs. Terrible songs in general.

Why do people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up every few hours?

Babies have a different sleeping cycle. sleep it´s not one of my strengths to say the least.

When lightning strikes the ocean, why don’t all the fish die?

I´m sure if a lightning strikes a fish that fish gonna die, and the ones around. a single lighting can´t kill the whole ocean fish population cause it dissipates quickly by spreading out.

Did Noah have woodpeckers on the ark? If he did, where did he keep them?

Is this christian magazine? Anyway haven´t seen the movie.

Why put a towel in the dirty clothes basket if when you get out of the shower you are clean?

I don´t, you handle them so they dry?

What happens to an irresistible force when it hits an immovable object? A big bang.

If there’s a speed of sound and a speed of light, is there a speed of smell?

I´m sure there is an equation for this. something like a rate of diffusion of the smell molecule in a given medium.

Why is a carrot more orange than an orange?

That´s debatable, and a bit absurd.

Why is tuna sometimes called “tuna fish”? Chicken is never called “chicken bird”.

Go around and make a riot. That is outrageous.

Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Sexist jokes on a side, I think the real reason is that it stretches your face and makes it easier to apply. i´m gonna ask my inner woman.

Who would win in a fight between Spiderman and Batman?

Wonder Woman with her lasso

We assume you create awkward moments, or revel in awkward moments… are there any that come to mind?

F.Y.I. featuring ARGY (Cadenza)

Read the interview

Argy is a DJ/Producer who has released music consistently for years. For years his music has been played by DJ’s around the world and releasing on labels like Jerome Sydenham ’s Ibadan , Deeply Rooted House and Cocoon , and released a full album in collaboration with a top vocalist, Mama. and On&On’s next installment of Free Your Inhibitions .

Where were you born?

I was born in Greece, on an island called Rhodes. Then I moved to London when I was 18 and since then I am back and forth between Berlin and London and summers in Ibiza.

At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”?

Actually I never really realized that. Sometimes you feel really confident and sometimes a little bit unsure when it all gets too much and its that feeling of unsureness that makes you do other beautiful things, experience other things in life for a week and then run back to your biggest passion, which for me is music obviously. I think this frustrating process is a sign of intellect. I don’t like people who are married to their identity. Jeff Mills is a good example of eclecticism. Thats a class act.

What time of music did you listen to growing up?

I grew up with early 90s MTV music, a lot of Neo-Soul, then got into House music and slowly into more experimental territories. But before i fall in love with electronic music i fell in love with good sounding songs.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played?

I am not a big fan of very long sets. I see the trend now but sometimes it has to do with the DJ’s ego and not a lot of artists can do it with integrity How interesting you think you can be for 12 hours? I think between 2 to 4 hours is enough to express yourself based on today’s standards of music appreciation. Songs are not 16min anymore and the audience’s attention span is much shorter because everything is faster.

What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard?

I am quite into the small room at Zouk Club in Singapore. I remember it had a wonderful and warm vintage sound. Loud but clear and kind of wooden.

Can you describe how your style music sounds?

I think my sound tends to be retro futuristic, covering 3 decades of electronic club music. A lot of NY elements and cunty moments as they would say here in the big apple. I think my sets are quite romantic with the nostalgic sense and have an open air feeling to them with a lot of energy. I am not the right person for slow trippy sets. I could do great gym mix tapes I can’t really describe more as its hard to talk about myself. My mixing style is more techno and my groove somewhere between house and techno.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months?

I love Derrick May on the decks, always..Just even to watch him is major. Also Sven Vath played a beautiful set at Watergate last time, one of those long sets that made perfect sense.

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go?

Based on the last Virgin Altantic Space accident i rather stay here on earth to be honest. I was never really a space freak as i was not a teenager in the 80s. I am more of a beach boy.

Read the interview

PillowTalk has been traveling and producing together non-stop since 2010. With consistently amazing releases and global demand, it’s clear their momentum isn’t going to let up anytime in the foreseeable future . We caught up with PillowTalk , for On&On’s next installment of F ree Y our I nhibitions….

At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”.

The point in which we realized we could quit our day jobs to just focus on music was when we released on Visionquest + Life and Death . Those are such influential labels to break out of the gate with.

What time of music did you listen to growing up?

We all grew up on a healthy dose of hip hop, r&b, new wave, rock, soul and early electronic.

If you could remix one of those artists music, and play with them, who would it be?

We all have a healthy obsession with Arther Russell .

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played?

About an hour for our live set. We have done 1hr and 30min depending on how many encores the crowd wants.

What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard?

In a club setting we would have to say Berghain . Festival setting would have to be the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury .

Where’s the best sound system you’ve ever played on?

Main stage at Fabric London

Can you describe how your style of music sounds? (For context, it’s 5AM, and you are playing a warm open air venue. There is an amazing sound system, and 1500 or your biggest fans)

Its very organic sounding. Lush and beautiful. We tend to structure our music around a vocals and a strong sense of story. We play off the crowd so its mostly give and take.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months?

Hercules and Love Affair played an amazing set a the Wonderfruit Festival in Thailand. Wonderful showmanship on the part of their lead singers.

How long do you see yourself performing and Djing for “Professionally”.

This is an impossible question to answer. Really depends on our health I would say.

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring,

and where would you go?

We would travel to the moons of Uranus enter the black hole and stay for a hot minute. We would bring our in-laws and leave them there.

What do you think about On&On ?

We all need to sleep eventually but it’s a challenging concept for sure. ( We love a great cause and challenge! )

F.Y.I. featuring Rob Garza (Thievery Corporation)

Read the interview

We sat down with Rob Garza from Thievery Corporation , asked a few questions, and had a lot of fun with this interview and On&On’s first installment of F ree Y our I nhibitions….

At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”.

I think while we were pressing the first Thievery CD “ Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi ” on our own label. Originally, we started Thievery as a hobby, just to shoot the shit, drink, our studio was in the liquor room of the 18th Street Lounge in DC. Me and Eric had to decide whether we wanted to press 500 or 1,000 CD’s. We decided to be brave and press 1,000. I remember a week after we got the CD’s we sold the first 1,000 and a company in Germany ordered another 2,000. I remember thinking maybe I can make a living doing this.

What time of music did you listen to growing up?

In my house there was a lot of old soul music played. Latin music and early rock and roll. The first thing that rely grabbed me during my musically formative years was punk. I loved the whole DIY spirit and felt like people were really speaking to me through music. Then I fell in love with Brazialian music, jazz, dub, hip hop, techno, old soundtracks. I love all different styles of music.

If you could remix one of those artists music, and open for them, who would it be?

For me the one artist would be Antonio Carlos Jobim . The famous Brazilian composer, his compositions are pure magic and have a longing sense of night time ethereal vibes. I’d love to get my hands on the multi tracks.

What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played?

My ideal set length is between 2- 3 hours, I’ve played 8 hour sets.

Can you describe how your style music sounds?

(For context, it’s 3AM , and your playing a warm open air venue, with an amazing sound system and there’s 1500 people who are huge fans of yours) My set tends to be in that tangental space where Nu-Disco meets Deep and Tech House. Theres a sweet spot in there that I really like. It is has some serious groove but with a nice edge.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months?

I saw Gus Gus in Mexico City a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I hadn’t seen them in a while and didn’t know what to expect. I really dug it! Our first live show was with them back in 97 so it was great to see them still doing their thing.

How long do you see yourself Djing for “Professionally”.

I never really look at what I’m doing in a professional context, it comes down to is it fun and do I enjoy doing it. If I stop enjoying it, I’ll stop doing it.

If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go?

I’d go the moon for a night with a few friends and take some psychedelics. That would be just fine for me. (We’ll be right there with you Rob!)

What do you think about On&On ?

Very nice site! Looks like you guys have some cool events coming up!

Rob is embarking on it’s first release March 10, 2015, on his new record label, Magnetic Moon . His latest EP, “Palace Of Mirrors” . The EP features collaborations & sounds inspired by his travels to India and Oaxaca. Palace of Mirrors features remixes from Nadastrom , Psychemagik , and vocals by Sutja Gutierrez .
